Die Bühne gehörte ihm.

Und was hielt er für richtig zu sagen?

Finally.

Um die Lichtverhältnisse zu klären, wurde Lampenschwarz benutzt. Zinkweiß holt die hellen Stellen auf dem Kelch und auf der Banderole um die kleinen Umschläge rechts zurück. Es ist auch auf dem Magazin links verwendet. Venetianischrot ganz rechts auf dem großen Briefumschlag.

Lamp black is used here to clarify the light situation, to enhance the shadows. Zinc white brings back the lighter parts on the cup and the banderole around the small envelopes on the right. It's used on the magazine on the left as well. Venetian red on the far right for the big envelope.

How to paint metal 2 - Erblassen

Als er an dem Morgen erwacht war, bemerkte er, das nicht er selber, sondern seine Umgebung erblasste, wenn es etwas zum Erblassen gab. Was dazu führte, das er bald gar nichts mehr sah.

Schichten aus lichten Ocker und Venetianischrot. Der Kelch ist Venetianischrot pur (diese Farbe wird später den metallischen Effekt unterstützen), das Regal ist ein Mix aus Venetianischrot und Ocker und die Briefumschläge sind Ocker pur. Der Hintergrund ist Ocker mit Zinkweiß.

Layers of light ocher and venetian red. The cup is venetian red only (this colour will help to make it look metallic later), the board is a mix and the envelopes on the right are ocher only. The background is ocher and zinc white.

How to paint metal 2 - Nicht mehr wichtig

Eine skizzenhafte, schwarzweiße Erinnerung nur, von der glorreichen Situation blieb in ihrem Gedächtnis. Es fiel ihr schon sehr schwer, sich überhaupt zu erinnern, was so glorreich an der Situation gewesen war.
Und sie wurde jedesmal wild, wenn die Schwester sagte, daß das nicht mehr wichtig sei.

How to paint metal 1 - Rosa Wesen

Ich möchte betonen, daß ich es nicht getrunken habe. Ein außerirdisches Wesen materialisierte sich hier, trank es auf und verschwand wieder. Es war rosa. Das Wesen.

Nein, ich hab nicht nach dem Namen gefragt.
Visum? Es hatte wahrscheinlich eins. Keine Ahnung.

Aber du hast recht, ich hätte das fragen sollen.

Titanweiß als Grundierung, und eine Bleistiftzeichnung darauf. Ich werde das nicht nach dem Photo malen. Das Ding ist genau vor meinem Arbeitstisch im Atelier. Mir gefielen die Farben. Mal sehen, wie weit wir kommen...
Man bemerke bitte, das die Form des Kelches nicht richtig ist, und die braunen Briefumschläge eine andere Form haben und vom Photo abgeschnitten werden. Aber da ich nicht nach dem Photo malen werde muss man sehen, was und wie das verändert werden wird.

Titanium white as gesso, and a pencil drawing on it. I am not going to paint this picture using the photo. That thing is right in front of me at my studios desk. I liked the colours. Lets see how far we can get...
Note that the shape of the cup is not drawn correctly and those brown envelopes have a different shape and are cut by the photos edge. But since I won't paint after the photo it remains to be seen, what and how this will be altered.

How to paint light - Vanitas und unterschätzt

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 10cm x 12cm.
Als Schlüsselsymbol für die Begrenztheit der Lebenszeit in Vanitas Stilleben - so dachte er - würden seine Fähigkeiten einfach nicht anerkannt.
Er fühlte sich stark unterschätzt, tragisch einfach herunterbrennend:

Ultramarin im Hintergrund. Das gibt dem dunklen Milori ein Glühen, das hilfreich ist, wie ich finde. Hinzugefügt wurde ein helles Grün (Permanentgelb und Ultramarin) auf dem Wachs um das Leuchten der Kerze zu zeigen. Die Flamme ist viel heller (als einzige Lichtquelle hat man gewisse Verpflichtungen...).
Nächstes Mal was anderes.

Ultramarine over the background. It gives this dark milori a glow, that helps, I think. Added is a light green (permanent yellow and very little ultramarine) on the wax to show the glowing of the candlestick. The flame is much lighter ( being the only light source has some obligations...).
Next time something else.

How to paint light - Loch im Himmel

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 10cm x 12cm.
Weißt du was? Es ist mir egal, ob du glaubst, daß da ein Loch im Himmel ist. Du bist sowieso zu spät. Es hat sich schon wieder geschossen. Siehst du die dünne Stelle da?
Nee. Natürlich nicht.

Es wurde noch verwischter. Die helle Stelle um die Flamme ist weiße Untermalfarbe (Zink) und eine dünne Milori Blau Schicht darüber. Im Moment ist das nicht sehr realistisch. Die Flamme ist zu schematisch und die erleuchtete Stele nicht weich genug.
Viel zu tun.
Die Kerze hat eine Schicht Titan bekommen, weil ich die Schnauze voll hatte von der unterliegenden Struktur.

It got even more blury. The light area around the flame is white underpaint (zinc) and a thin milori blue layer on top of that. Right now it is not very realistic. The flame is too schematic and the illuminated area is not smooth enough.
Lots to do.
The candle got a titanium layer because I got fed up with the undlerlying structure.

How to paint light - Hol deine Brille

Alles verschwindet. Alles ist unscharf und deprimiert mich. Es scheint alles so sinnlos.

Im Grunde wurde das Bild nochmal gemalt. Die Flamme ist realistischer im Sinne von "Wo - ist - das - Feuer - Gelb - und - wo - Orange - meine - Güte - nochmal". Der Hintergrund ist in Kreisen um die Flamme gemalt. In kommenden Schichten wird das sichtbar werden.

Basically the painting is painted once more. The flame is more realistic in terms of "where - is - the - fire - yellow - and - where - is - it - orange - for - goodness - sake". The background is painted in circles around the flame. In the layers to come it will be visible.

Also.
Miloriblau im Hintergrund, Zinkweiß für das Wachs und Permanentgelb und Igrazinorange für die Flamme. Für den Docht eine Mischung aus all diesen Farben.
Nächstes Mal: das Licht und der Raum.

Sorry I didn´t post

Since a few days I my back behaves in a way, that I am really proud, when I manage to get out of bed within 10 minutes. It makes you humble, walking around like a question mark. Consequently, painting is slow right now.

Well.

It's not really walking.

Anyway, this is the reason for not posting. I have a picture almost ready. Maybe tomorrow.

How to paint, well what? - Durchfall

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 10cm x 12cm.
Ich weiß nicht. Ich denke immernoch, der Taubendurchfall sieht beunruhigend aus.
Trotz der wirklich schönen Symmetrie.

Und jetzt mal was ganz anderes. Die Tafel ist "grundiert" mit 1:1 Terpentin und Leinölfirniß (Halböl). Und keine Pigmente. Krapplack und Zinkweiß wird hier verwendet.
Also.
Was ist das?
Technisch gesagt sind das einige Spuren von Pinselstrichen. Sie sind in einer art nordostsüdwest-Komposition angeordnet. Die Farbe ist dünn, beinahe wie Aquarell.
Das ist im Grunde, was IST.
Aber was soll es bedeuten, bezeichnen, symbolisieren? Zum Beispiel Magnoliablütenblätter oder, tja, was noch? Oder allgemeiner: Wo ist die Grenze der Interpretation?
Meine Antwort bisher: die Grenze ist die Vorstellungskraft und das Wissen des Betrachters, gesteuert und begrenzt durch die Absicht, zu verstehen oder mißzuverstehen.

Was könnte es sonst noch sein? Vorschläge?

And now for something completely different.
The panel is "gessoed" with 1:1 Turpentine and Linseedvarnish (Halböl in geman, half-oil). And no pigments. Rose madder and zinc white is used to paint here.
So.
What is this?
Technically speaking, these are some traces of brush strokes. They are organized in a north-east-south-west kind of composition. The paint is thin, almost like watercolour.
This is actually, what it IS.
But what does it mean, signify or symbolize? For example, magnolia flower-leaves, or well what else? Or in general: Where is the boundary for interpretation?
My answer so far: The boundary is in the imagination and knowledge of the viewer, limited and driven by the intention to understand or misunderstand.

What else could it be? Any suggestions?

How to paint skin 6.6 -

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 10cm x 12cm.
Nachdem sie so lange gewartet hatte war sie nicht mal wütend. Müde müde müde.
Die Idee eines Malers sein? Niemals. Wieder. Nie.
Selbst die Phantasie eines einsamen, notgeilen, deprimierenden Mannes ist besser als das.
Es ist hart, jemandes Idee zu sein.

Being an idea of a painter? Never. Ever. Again.
Even being the fantasy of a lonely, horny, saddening man is better than this.
It' hard being just an idea of someone.

Ein letztes Mal Zinkweiß zur "Weißhöhung" von Wange, Nase, Auge und Oberlippe (endet alles mit "e". Komisch). Grüne Erde wieder für die Schatten. Venizianischrot und Zinkweiß für die Haare und Augen brauen.

A last time zinc white for highlighting cheek, nose, eye and upper lip. Green earth again for the shadows. Venetian red and zinc white for the hair and eyebrows.

How to paint skin 6.5 - Rosa Vorstellungskraft

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 10cm x 12cm.
Sie stellte sich vor, das Blau im Hintergrund wäre rosa. Weil sie nämlich rosa mochte und Komplementärkontraste haßte. Ihre Vorstellungskraft, die sehr sehr sehr stark war, schaffte es beinahe.

Eine Schicht blau im Hintergrund. Wieder Zinkweiß im Gesicht und Sommersprossen hineingewischt. Einige mehr vom Mundwinkel bis zur Nase, sie neigen dazu, dort rumzulungern...
Dies ist bald fertig. Danach erstmal keine Haut mehr. Was anderes.

Blue layer on the Background. Again zinc white on the face and the freckles blurred into it. A few more on the way from the angle oft the mouth up to the nose, as they tend to hang arround there more...
This ist close to finish now. After that no more skin for a while. Something else.
