How to paint skin 6.6 -

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 10cm x 12cm.
--++--
After waiting so long she wasn't even angry. Tired tired tired.
Being an idea of a painter? Never. Ever. Again.
Even being the fantasy of a lonely, horny, saddening man is better than this.
It' hard being just an idea of someone.
------------------------------
Fertig.
Und das wars erstmal mit Haut.
Ich hoffe, es war eine Hilfe.
--++--
A last time zinc white for highlighting cheek, nose, eye and upper lip. Green earth again for the shadows. Venetian red and zinc white for the hair and eyebrows.
Finish.
And thats it with skin for now.
I hope it helped.

How to paint skin 6.5 - Rosa Vorstellungskraft

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 10cm x 12cm.
--++--
She imagined, the blue in the background being pink. Because she liked pink and hated komplementary contrasts.
Her imagination, being very very very strong, almost succeded.
------------------------------
Was anderes.
--++--
Blue layer on the Background. Again zinc white on the face and the freckles blurred into it. A few more on the way from the angle oft the mouth up to the nose, as they tend to hang arround there more...
This ist close to finish now. After that no more skin for a while. Something else.

How to paint skin 6.4 - Klassische Musik

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 10cm x 12cm.
--++--
Listening to classical music is done best with eyes closed. The look is more sensitive and classical- music- expert- like. Which is why people listen to classical music, when others can see them.
------------------------------
--++--
Lots of changes. A layer of zinc white on the whole head. Shadows and dark parts with green earth and ocher. Hair with ocher and venetian red. The freckles. Also done with ocher and venetian red. But. To avoid the impression of having them ON the skin and not blended in as part of the skin, the were blurred in to the skin with tiny bits of zinc white while the paint was still wet. The way they spread over the face is not ok yet. Next time.

How to paint skin 6.3 - Schwerkraft

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 10cm x 12cm.
--++--
Sleeping while standing wasn´t the brightest idea of the century, actually. But she hat a love-hate relationship with gravity and liked to tease it a bit.
------------------------------
Also.

--++--
Now that looks seriously ill. The reason is, that the colours are too dark and the grey freckles still shine through, more than wished.
So.
After the usual skin tone with green earth as shadow colour and ocher and zinc white for the freckles it simply shows, that the whole thing is too dark and "colourful".

So next time a layer of zinc white and a few corrections.

How to paint skin 6.1 - Möwenei

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 10cm x 12cm.
--++--
While you were sleepin, I turned your head halfway into a seagulls egg. Yes, I can turn it back again, but you have to be nice to me.
------------------------------

--++--
All is kept black and white as long as possible. One problem less so to speak.
Things to observe:
Where are freckles big and where are they small.
Where are they dark, where are thy light.
Beeing almost circles, note that the view on the freckles almost always is from an angle making them ovals, varying from fat to slim.
Where is the concentration of freckles high, where low.

The big problem will be, to avoid the impression of a skin disease. We will see. Next time colour.

How to paint skin 6.1 - Sommersprossen

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 10cm x 12cm.
Langweilig. Irgendwie.
--++--
I don´t know. This thinking in black and white may all be very clear and systematic.
But it´s so colourless. Boring. Sort of.
------------------------------
Also.
--++--
Sandra asked me to do a picture about freckles. Nice idea!
Here we go.
First aperson in black and white. People with freckles usually have a very sun-sensitive, very white or pink skin, that turns red (and freckled...) and almost never brown when exposed to the sun. They quite often have red or reddish-blond hair. But I know black haired people with freckles, too.
Anyway. Next time the freckles themselves.

How to paint skin 4.3 - Letzte Haut?

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 10cm x 12cm.
Wieder kein Text.
--++--
No text again. Time to start a new picture...
Oh, one thing: In case it is not clear: I am fully, conceptually, fundamentally, utterly (any other words of that kind?) against physical or psychological violence. But I am for knowledge about it.
------------------------------
--++--
A final layer of zinc white everywhere. Milori blue and rose madder dabbed over the bruise, to show the concentration of the blood, coming from the brocken capillars (is that the right word for tiny vein?). In german there is a beautiful word for that: Blutgerinsel ("Blut"=blood, Gerinsel: derived from verb "gerinnen" (=agglutinate), Gerinsel= something agglutinated)

I will stop the subject "skin" here unless someone posts a comment demanding a skin-topic to be explained. Don´t hesitate, comments (not only on this issue...) welcome!
Otherwise next week a new thing.

How to paint skin 4.3 - Im Ernst

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 10cm x 12cm.
Keine Schmunzelgeschichte heute.
--++--
No funny story today. The more realistic it becomes, the more serious it gets.
------------------------------
--++--
Rosemadderzincwhiteocher all over the place again, except for the bruise, again. And dabbed again. The bruise is bohemian green earth and ocher blurred into the unharmed skin and on top a little rose madder.
Bruises were quite popular among torturers (the argentinian junta had manuals, where it was taught in detail), because it leaves no traces after a while. The methods nowadays are a bit more sophisticated (e.g no sleep at all, loud shrill noise etc.). By the way, do you know the paintings by Botero on this issue?

How to paint skin 4.2 - Olympus Mons

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 10cm x 12cm.
--++--
"...It was cloudy on mars this day. But the olympus mons was clearly visible..."
"Shut up, will you?! And take that bucket off your head!! You´re not an astronaut, ok?! Not!!"
------------------------------
--++--
Bohemian green earth and ocher dabbed over the entire surface area, except for the bruise (milori blue, dabbed also). It looks like a skin carcinome, actually. Not intended, but nice to know. I never stop learning...

How to paint skin 4.1 - Rosa Brille

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 10cm x 12cm.
"Sie hams gemacht! Sie haben es tatsächlich gemacht!! Sie haben die Himmelsfarbe geändert! Schööön!"
"Nimm die Brille ab.
Bitte."
--++--
"They did it! They really did it!! They changed the color of the sky! Niiiiece!"
"Take off your glasses.
Please."
------------------------------
Also.
--++--
This will be a piece of skin.
I thought: What else could be useful to know about painting skin? Well. For example, if you want to express your enthusiasm or its opposite about torture modern forms of questioning (a highly controversial issue right now...) it would be, I thought, quite handy to know how to paint things like bruises.
So. Technically speaking it´s a first layer in rose madder/zinc white/ocher. Painted over a completely failed attempt to paint a flower, by the way.

How to paint skin 2 - feddisch

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 12cm x 18cm.
--++--
He always wondered what they thought when he was standing on the transporter-belt, moving past them, motionless. Like on a catwalk without catwalking.
------------------------------

Was Denken Sie?

--++--
Zinc white all over the face (said to be wound-healing...), beard redone with ocher and milori blue. Background got blue. One layer milori blue. Lights on lower lip, nose, neck and cheek with zinc white.

This ist finished. Going on would not improve anything, but cause mistakes that need repairing and redoing. At least it´s my impression for now.

What do you think? I´m always open to discussion...

But I´ll stich to skin in the next picture.

How to paint skin 2 - Bart gefärbt

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 12cm x 18cm.
Sososo.
--++--
Wellwellwell.
What do we have here.
Dyed your beard?
Come on, get a razor before anyone sees that!
------------------------------
Was keine schöne Erfahrung war.
Naja. Fertig is noch nicht...
--++--
Isn´t this worse than the ones before? Yes, I think so. And this is an important observation. A painting-process isn´t a straight line up (or down). You have good phases and bad ones. In the bad phases you sow, in the good ones you harvest.
I had to move the nose downwards. Which was not a nice experience. The cheek is altered a bit, you can still see the black from the background shine through. The ear is a complete nono. And the beard. Well. Get the razor.
But.
Never. Ever. Give. Up.
The mouth ist almost smiling. Very simple to do, if you realize, where a smile takes place. In the corners of the mouth. And only there. Everything else is grinning. Move those corners up a bit and place a convincing schadow around there. Thats it.
Well. It´s far from finished, though.

How to paint skin 2 - Projektion, klassisch

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 12cm x 18cm.

--++--
Pale and grey it seemed to him. Life in general. But that, dear reader was a classical projection. He was pale and grey and nothing else.

Except for the right part of the black, perhaps.

--++--
Zinc white is your friend. The rather expressionistic colours are dimmed a bit (except for the nostrils and the lips) by a thin layer of that great pigment. And the flat background is now enlightened and spacious.

How to paint skin 2 - Schwarzbewacher

Guarding the black, he imagined, required a unfriendly face. So he practiced every day.
------------------------------
--++--
Ocher red and zinc white, the white-skin-classics and cobalt blue is in use here. The nose is still strange. But the not so shaved chin is really not so shaved. Done with the cobalt blue. The shirt has turned red temporarily. The mouth is better, looks concentrated, to say it politely.

Ok. You're grown up. It's your responsibility.

How to paint skin 2 - Grau is alle Theorie, entscheiden is aufm Platz

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 12cm x 18cm.
--++--
Double chin and a mouth after a bite in a lemon. Great.
That´s what he thought. And that´s what´s been painted.
--------------------
--++--
Grisaille, and a lot to do ahead. The mouth is far from ready, the nose is on its way, but not detailed enough and the shoulder is kinda missing. But with thin layers and patience you can achive a lot.

After the hiatus, back to start

Peinlich.

Also. Hier die lange Version. (Ein neues Malprojekt nach den ganzen Buchstaben):

1. Materialien

Leinölfirniß) NEHMEN BEIM TROCKNEN AN VOLUMEN ZU!!!
Bewirkt also das Gegenteil.

So. Und hier noch das Rezept für Dammarharz

Rezept für Dammar-Lösung 1:2

Materialien:
Balsamterpentin, Dammarharz, Nylonstrumpf oder Gaze
Meßgefäß
großes verschließbares Lösungsgefäß mit großem Deckel (z.B. Gurkenglas)

Vorgehensweise:

--++--

After such a long break, due to serius problems with my studio and, as I mentioned, some private issues, this blog will continue.

I realized, that I actually never explained, who to make egg-tempera.

Well. That. Is. Embarrassing.

Here we go. The long version (a new painting project below all these letters):

1. Materials

1.1. Get a transparent jar (glass) with parallel walls (a classic cylinder, that is. No cone- or cola-shaped thing. The reason why: later) with a lid or cap closing waterproof.

1.2. Get Linseed-oil Varnish (e.g. at Kremer). That is the oily part of the tempera, that makes the paint water-resistant after drying completely (about a week).

1.3. Get dammar-solution 1:2 (e.g. at Kremer). Or make it yourself (recipe below). Besides being a desinfectant (remember? we´re going to use eggs. You´ll be glad for every desinfectant if you know the smell of eggs gone rotten...) dammar-solution has a very important function. Oils (such as our linseed-varnish) gain volume while drying (!). That is the reason for a lot of cracks in oilpaintings. If you paint over not completely dried oilpaint, the underlying, still swelling paint tears apart the upper oilpaint.
Dammar-solution loses volume while drying. So it´s the opposite effect. That provides the wonderful feature of tempera-paint of being capable to be painted over endlessly. Until the invention of acrylics (that have other problems) a unique feature.

1.4. Get as much hen-eggs as you need. That is our emulsifier, keeping oil-based and water-based ingredients in balance and emulsion (put simple: so you can paint it with water as a solution).

1.5. Get adhesive tape made of paper (or someting you can put marks on).

2. How to make tempera

2.1. Take the tape and adhere it vertically from top to bottom on the side of the jar.

2.2. put the whole egg (except the eggshell...), that means the yellow and the white of the eggs (one egg up to filling half the jar) in the jar and close it. Shake the closed ja for at least 3min. That is very important!! The emulsion falls apart more easily if not mixed well. You can use a mixer as well, but that´s foaming a lot.

2.3. Mark on the tape the level of the scrabled-egg-liquid (first mark). Second mark is the doubled height of the liquid. Third mark ist in the middle between mark one and mark two, dividing the upper (empty) half in quarters.
Here it gets obvious, why we need a cylinder and not a cone-like jar. The marks are for volumes of ingredients to add. Those volumes would not be correct in cone-like jars.

2.4. From here it gets very simple. Add dammar-solution up to mark three (the one in the middle). Shake again for at least 3min (really important!). Then add linseed-varnish up to mark two (the upper mark) and shake again for at least 3min.

That is the fundamental egg-tempera recipe after Wehlte (sorry, no english text found). It is expandable in oilpaint-direction by adding more linseedoil-varnish (better linseedoil or puppyseed oil). Or in watercolour/gouache-direction by adding waterbased binder like cellulose glue or bone glue or gummi arabicum or even acrylic binder.

Fundamental rule: Shake very well after each addition of an ingredient!!!

To do not so is the most common mistake causing problems in making tempera.
For further conservation you can add clove oil or what ever Kremer has for it. And no, Kremer does not pay me for recommending them. They´re good. Simple as that.

Recipe for dammar solution 1:2

Materials
balsamturpentine, dammar, a stocking made of nylon
a measuring jar
a big jar, that can be closed to solve the dammar resin in

How to make dammar solution
Dammar 1:2 means one volume dammar resin is being solved in two volumes of balsamturpentine. To do so, you fill the measuring ja with balsamturpentine (the solving jar must be at least twice as big!). then you pour it into the big jar. Dry the measureing jar with a napkin or so. Then fill it half with dammar resin. Pour that into the nylon stocking and hang it into the big jar one third into the turpentine (to hang it deeper can cause the dammar to agglutinate). Fixate it with the lid. The solution takes a few days. Keep the dammar solution away from direct light.

Hello. I am still alive.

No german text today. I don´t feel like it.

Well. This isn´t quite daily anymore and you deserve an explanation. I am (almost was) in serious trouble concerning my studio preventing me from working there (besides of some other private difficulties...). I won´t go into details. They´re not beautiful.
But.
Next picture is on its way. I have to be in Vienna for a few days. After that I´ll resume posting.

Herzlichen Gruß

Gerd

And: THANK YOU for asking, how I am. I appreciate that.

How to paint skin 3.6 - Oktoberfest

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 12cm x 18cm.
--++--
In Bavaria at the Oktoberfest they had this contest of holding a full glass of beer away from you, the arm straight forward as long as you can. That´s what he was thinking about while he was sitting there, pushing the buttons of the remote control frantically.
------------------------------
--++--
Light ochre is the latest layer of paint here. It heals all the wounds...
Applied with a brush and rubbed off again partially, to have lighter parts and to leave some things (the scar) still visible.
I´ll stop with the arm here. But not with skin. What I learnt here: Arms aren´t thaaat interesting to paint. At least without context. Anyway. There are other parts of skin. More to come.

Herzlichen Gruß

Gerd

How to paint skin 3.5 - Viel zu ernst

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 12cm x 18cm.
Heute kein seltsamer Text hier. Entschuldigung.
--++--
No weird text here today. The picture gets much more serious than intended. Sorry for that.
------------------------------

This arm has a scar and some bruises. The colouring is a bit too much, it will dimm down in the next steps. It got a hairy skin as well.
All effects are made in one layer. The scar is a single brush stroke with dark violet. It was adjusted (faded out) with a dry brush. On the upper side of the scar sanies is visible, painted with plain cadmium yellow. The bruises are made with the remaining violet. Very little paint in a dry brush, rubbed on the surface of the canvas.
The hair is made with a light brown (use what ever haircolour you like to paint) applied in a kind of semi-kalligraphic way. Like trying to imitate chinese writing, and then rubbing a dry brush over it, to blur it and to get it lighter. In lighter areas the hair colour is lighter as well.

How to paint skin 3.4 - Fernbedienung

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 12cm x 18cm.
--++--
Well, at least the couldn´t see what he was holding in his hand. Being naked was surely enough to be embarassed about. But if the knew, he held the remote control to switch them off, changing to another world, he would have been confronted with a half laughing half panicing crowd. He preferred the full laughter.
------------------------------
Tja. Beinahe fertig.
--++--
Well. Almost finished. We have a skin tone (red, ochre and white, as ever), a bit reddish, but its winter, sun is rarely seen. The pigments were all transparent. And it looked bad. So I took a bit titanium white to lessen the transparency of the whit part of the skin tone. It helped a lot. Painting is not a dogma or a religious ritual to be followed precisely. It is an adventure, where you have to solve problems coming your way.
It´s a bit too perfect yet, we need some spots or someting. That´s next.

How to paint skin 3.3 - Illegaler Schnee

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 12cm x 18cm.
--++--
Yes, it was enough. Never again. And, especially not this rotten cheap wine. Never again. And then he thought, that it would be really nice, if those colours would fade and give way to the real ones to come back again.
------------------------------
--++--
Rose madder and cobalt green is the next layer to paint the skin in the "14 centuryish painting technique". Of course this is overdone extremely. We´re in the 21th century, you know...
But still, the principle works. You have a sketch, then you have light and and darkness, then you have underlying colours accordingly to modulate the skin tone, that will follow as a finish, at least for the time being...

How to paint skin 3.2 - Illegaler Schnee

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 12cm x 18cm.
Ja. Da stimmte definitiv was nicht. Total.
--++--
Yes. There was definitely something wrong. Since this was supposed to be a desert, snow wasn´t allowed here. Totally. So, to remove the illegaly immigrated snow from the desert, some people ready to work for very little money were desperately needed. Any suggestions?
------------------------------
--++--
Next glaze. To paint glazes with opaque colours isn´t that smart. So zinc white and a black pigment made of burnt vine is used here (available e.G. at Kremer-Pigmente. And no, I have no advertising deal or anything with them.).
It´s about defining the light and dark areas of the lower arm and the background. It is not about dark parts of the skin (e.g spots or visible veins) or any material. About that later.
So the light/dark aspect here should be a bit of a caricature, because it will be painted over and should still contribute to the appearance of the picture.
Oh, one tiny thing: If you have to paint a soft but not too broad change from light to dark (or other way round), paint a sharp contrast, the two tones close to each other, no gap between. Then dry your brush (or take a new one, but that might be too dry) and paint on the contrast line along the line (not in a rectangular direction, crossing the contrast!!). Repeat that a few times and you have an almost Vermeer-like contrast line (I´m exaggerating a bit, of course...)

Herzlichen Gruß

Gerd

Short notice - Kurze Nachricht

Also keine Sorge.

--++--

You may have noticed, that the "daily" of this blog is not that strict anymore. That is due to some developments in my life which I won´t discuss here.

To say it short:

The discontinuity will continue for the time beeing.

I will return to the regular basis as soon as possible.

And I will still be posting painting examples, don´t worry. But not today, for example.

Sorry for that.

But this is not ending, it is slowing down a bit. So don´t worry.

How to paint skin 3.1 - Wüste

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 12cm x 18cm.

Himmel, Wüste, wasser.
Sie dachten, sie hätten das Rätsel gelöst. Sie holten tief Luft.
Falsch.
Kein Himmel. Keine Wüste. Kein Wasser. Also, was können wir machen.
So tun, als ob. So tun, als ob. So tun, als ob.
--++--
Sky, desert, water.
They thought, they solved the riddle. They took a deep breath.
Wrong.
No Sky. No Desert. No Water. So, what can we do?
Pretend. Pretend. Pretend.
------------------------------
Also nochmal. Dies ist die erste Schicht. Mein rechter Unterarm.
--++--
Here we go again. This is the first layer. It´s my lower right arm. On the left you can see the tendon, which sometimes gets visible when you make a fist. Background is ultramarine, skincolour is along the recipe given in previous posts. Important, when you paint skin, that is not covering any spectacular area (feet, hands, faces e.g.) of the body: don´t paint it spectacular, when it isn´t!

Herzlichen Gruß

Gerd

How to paint skin 2 - Versteck

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 12cm x 18cm.
Oh nein.
Sie werden es nicht kriegen. Ich habe das perfekte Versteck. Nein, es ist nicht in der Küche. Nein, nicht unterm Bett. Komm, jeder kennt das!
Nein.
Es ist hier. Hier in meiner Hand.
--++--
Oh no.
They won´t get it. I have a perfect hiding place. No, it is not in the kitchen. No, not under the bed. Come on, everybody knows that!
No.
It´s here. Here in my hand.
------------------------------

--++--
When you think of it, it is quite easy, actually.
First step: Determine the shape by drawing it. Then paint the dark areas and schadow either violet or green (decide by observation, if your´e interested in realism).
Second step: Fill the shape with a skin-tone. The previously painted areas as well. But make it translucent where appropiate and opaque where appropiate (watch it closly!!).
Third step: Mix a lighter skin-tone and highlight the parts necessary to give it volume (again: watch it closly!!).

Thats basically it.

Herzlichen Gruß

Gerd

How to paint skin 1 - Auffe Fresse

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 10cm x 15cm.
--++--
They hung out as cool as they rehearsed all week.
Them against the rest.
Although they didn´t really know who the rest was, they were determined to slap in the face right away.
Because they rehearsed beeing so cool all week.
------------------------------
--++--
This is a premiere on this blog.
It is actually the first time I painted by direct observation (yes, they are the fingers of my right hand. I paint with my left hand). All previous postings were sort of collages of memorized patterns. I painted them from memory.
Still using primary colours and white only. A few rules (to break later):
"White" skin colour is a mix of white, carmin and ochre. Never do shadows or any dark area with black. It looks dirty, unwashed. Use green earth instead (verdaccio). "Red" areas of white skin is made with violett (add ultramarine to the carmin). "White" areas have a touch of yellow.
Focus on the colours. Anatomy is not important here (the posted picture here is not so accurate and realistic as the displayed scan may suggest. It´s painted pretty rough, actually).
Observe your skin and admire, what Lucian Freud has done.

How to paint clouds. Cloud 9 - Nach Hause

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 10cm x 15cm.
--++--
Cloud nine. A good one to end this series. Especially, because a new thing is standing in line and is getting impatient.
These clouds are going home. It was a hard working day.
------------------------------
--++--
Primary colours and white again. I learnt painting using these colours only. The hard way. But it worked and I appreciate (now) the methods of my teacher.
Observe the colours of the sky at sunrise and sunset. Very important.
If they´re warm colours, you got a lot of pollution to breathe. Dust and smog makes the sky orange. The clearer the air the colder the colours.

How to paint clouds. Cloud 8 - Langweilige Szene

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 10cm x 15cm.
Nichts.
--++--
Nothing. Nothing and nobody. It was plain empty. How he hated flying over boring landscapes.
But we, as the distant narrator and readers, know, of course, that he was fishing for compliments, being the star of the scene instantly. That boring scene at least.
------------------------------
--++--
First time we have the landscape visible here. Not without a reason. It is important to understand the sky (with or without clouds) as a part of the landscape that is corresponding to all other elements of the picture (remember composition?). So we have the chance to "invent" clouds, that are saying something about the landscape rather than just report the cloud that was there, ruining the impression you want to communicate.
The landscape is very calm (ok, boring) and open wide. So to say this intentionally, one shouldn´t paint a spectacular, detail-crazy, bombastic cloud. It should fit into the picture and behave.

How to paint clouds. Cloud 7 - Pelzmantel

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 10cm x 15cm.
--++--
Like a big fur coat it looked. A fur coat, thrown and now flying.
Fur doesn´t thunder and it has hair, not raindrops.
------------------------------
Wenig Farbe an trocknem Pinsel.
--++--
Colours used here: Ultramarine light, cadmium yellow light, cadmium red medium and titanium white. The classics of opaque if you need primary colours and white.
At painting these clouds you have the rare opportunity to completely ruin a colour mixing. Get as muddy as you can. Vary it with white and yellow. Use little colour on a dry brush. Don´t clean the brush with water during painting the clouds (you need those muddy colours!)
By the way: I found some more cloud photos. They are so weired, you really have to mean surrealism, if you choose such clouds to paint.
What clouds do you want to see here? Suggestions at the comments, please.
