How to paint skin 1 - Auffe Fresse

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 10cm x 15cm.
--++--
They hung out as cool as they rehearsed all week.
Them against the rest.
Although they didn´t really know who the rest was, they were determined to slap in the face right away.
Because they rehearsed beeing so cool all week.
------------------------------
--++--
This is a premiere on this blog.
It is actually the first time I painted by direct observation (yes, they are the fingers of my right hand. I paint with my left hand). All previous postings were sort of collages of memorized patterns. I painted them from memory.
Still using primary colours and white only. A few rules (to break later):
"White" skin colour is a mix of white, carmin and ochre. Never do shadows or any dark area with black. It looks dirty, unwashed. Use green earth instead (verdaccio). "Red" areas of white skin is made with violett (add ultramarine to the carmin). "White" areas have a touch of yellow.
Focus on the colours. Anatomy is not important here (the posted picture here is not so accurate and realistic as the displayed scan may suggest. It´s painted pretty rough, actually).
Observe your skin and admire, what Lucian Freud has done.

How to paint clouds. Cloud 9 - Nach Hause

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 10cm x 15cm.
--++--
Cloud nine. A good one to end this series. Especially, because a new thing is standing in line and is getting impatient.
These clouds are going home. It was a hard working day.
------------------------------
--++--
Primary colours and white again. I learnt painting using these colours only. The hard way. But it worked and I appreciate (now) the methods of my teacher.
Observe the colours of the sky at sunrise and sunset. Very important.
If they´re warm colours, you got a lot of pollution to breathe. Dust and smog makes the sky orange. The clearer the air the colder the colours.

How to paint clouds. Cloud 8 - Langweilige Szene

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 10cm x 15cm.
Nichts.
--++--
Nothing. Nothing and nobody. It was plain empty. How he hated flying over boring landscapes.
But we, as the distant narrator and readers, know, of course, that he was fishing for compliments, being the star of the scene instantly. That boring scene at least.
------------------------------
--++--
First time we have the landscape visible here. Not without a reason. It is important to understand the sky (with or without clouds) as a part of the landscape that is corresponding to all other elements of the picture (remember composition?). So we have the chance to "invent" clouds, that are saying something about the landscape rather than just report the cloud that was there, ruining the impression you want to communicate.
The landscape is very calm (ok, boring) and open wide. So to say this intentionally, one shouldn´t paint a spectacular, detail-crazy, bombastic cloud. It should fit into the picture and behave.

How to paint clouds. Cloud 7 - Pelzmantel

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 10cm x 15cm.
--++--
Like a big fur coat it looked. A fur coat, thrown and now flying.
Fur doesn´t thunder and it has hair, not raindrops.
------------------------------
Wenig Farbe an trocknem Pinsel.
--++--
Colours used here: Ultramarine light, cadmium yellow light, cadmium red medium and titanium white. The classics of opaque if you need primary colours and white.
At painting these clouds you have the rare opportunity to completely ruin a colour mixing. Get as muddy as you can. Vary it with white and yellow. Use little colour on a dry brush. Don´t clean the brush with water during painting the clouds (you need those muddy colours!)
By the way: I found some more cloud photos. They are so weired, you really have to mean surrealism, if you choose such clouds to paint.
What clouds do you want to see here? Suggestions at the comments, please.

How to paint clouds. Cloud 6 - Verstecken

--++--
They hid behind the wall. At least they thought so. But being larger than they felt, their heads were still visible, one more than the other.
We´re not here! We´re not here! We´re not here! We´re not here! We´re not here! We´re not here!
Repeat it often enough, and everybody will belive it.
------------------------------
Die Natur kombiniert ziemlich oft verschiedene Wolkenarten. Maler nicht. Warum?
--++--
Combining different types of clouds is something nature does quite often. Painters do not. Why? I don´t know about nature, but artists want to be as clear as possible. And different clouds on a painting shout for a reason. If there isn´t one, why confusing the viewer?

How to paint clouds. Cloud 5 - Wütend

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 10cm x 15cm.
--++--
They were angry, fuming. The night was theirs and every morning came the morning and took the night away. Since they couldn´t do anything about it, they kept it at being angry in the morning about the morning being the morning.
------------------------------
--++--
Igrazine orange coelin blue, crimson and cobalt blue. Thats the sky in the morning. The light situation is kind of reverse. The bottom of the clouds are the lightest, top is dark (the light comes from underneath). Aditionally the clouds are the darkest part (usually they´re thelightest).
Experiment with white as a highlight of the edge of the clouds. Nature can be so trashy. Exchange the colours and observe the point from where on it gets absolute kitsch. At that time of day almost everything is possible, the more pollution in the air, the more colours...

How to paint clouds. Cloud 4 - Long fight

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 10cm x 15cm.
--++--
These two swordlike airplane-farts were fighting for the title "Most efficient destroyer of our beloved global climate". It was a looong hard fight and it is still unclear, who the winner is.
And at the same time there is a lot of competition from down there.
------------------------------
--++--
The sky is a mix of titanium white and cobalt blue this time. The condensation trails are white with tiny amounts of violet, made of crimson and cobalt blue. The blurring of the contrasts is made by dancing with a dry brush along the border of the wet sky and the wet condensation trails.
Next time more colours.

How to paint clouds. Cloud 3 - Slow Fox

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 10cm x 15cm.
Sie tanzten. Langsam. Sehr langsam.
--++--
They were dancing. Slowly. Very slowly. Why hurry, rain comes soon enough.
------------------------------
Zweitens: Was scharfkantig anfängt, endet unscharf.
--++--
The colours used to build the volume of the clouds are a yellowish white and a greyish violet. Two rules.
First:Don´t break the laws of light and shadow, there is only one sun (!).
Second: what starts sharp shaped, ends fuzzy. The cloud on the top right corner for instance. Bottom is dark and starts fuzzy. That zone ends in a sharp white-grey contrast. It´s kindasortof the personality of this kind of cloud.
Now follow the rules and break them.

How to paint clouds. Cloud 2 - Geschäftsmann

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 10cm x 15cm.
--++--
Being a businessman, he kept an eye on appearing busy. Which was done most effectively by being in a hurry and actually being not there anymore. So he faded through his entire life.
------------------------------

--++--
Colours here: Cobalt blue and titanium white. Very easy kind of cloud (does anyone know the latin name? Really would like to know.). It is so thin, it has no shadow or darker parts. So all you have to do is paint ablue sky and paint little white (dry brush again) in strokes, that always go the same direction. Not a straight line, more like a bow. Try to leave some centers, where the white dominates. That´s it.

Oh, one more thing: Watch clouds!
That´s where we wanna go.

How to paint clouds. Cloud 1 - Solo

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 10cm x 15cm.
Endlich.
Wolkenballett, Solo.
Aber bald regnet`s.
--++--
At last.
Alone on stage.
No one to interfere and disrupt the performance. No one hurrying and ignoring the grace of the slow motion, being trained over and over again.
Cloud ballet, solo.
But soon it´s gonna rain.
------------------------------
Man mache dies häufig!
--++--
A viewer of this blog asked me to explain how to paint clouds. Gladly done. It will be another set of pictures like the apple-project, describing various clouds.
Here we go. First, draw the shape of the cloud (those parts, that really cover the sky) on the canvas. Then you paint the sky, except for the cloud shape. I used cobalt blue here. Experiment, there are (is...) a lot of blues possible in the sky.
Then you paint the cloud with titanium white. Try to avoid contact with the wet sky. Now we have to "cloudiefy" the picture. Take a dry brush and shove the white into the blue moving the brush in a spiral course from white to blue. Always keep the brush dry, meaning: NO cleaning with water, get rid of the paint by painting on a piece of paper until no paint comes off the brush. Do that frequently!
Clouds are seldom flat. That means its volume has light and shadow. Leave the light white (sunsets come in a later post). The darker part of a cloud is gray, or let´s say grayish. Never use black and white for this gray! It is a most colourful gray. I used rose madder, ocher and cobalt blue for this. Experiment! Use very little paint. Use a dry brush, the same way as described above for the "cloudiefying". The shadow almost everytime (except for some sunsets) is at the lower third of the cloud.

Herzlichen Gruß

Gerd

How to paint things in a glass - Piercing

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 10cm x 15cm.
Just hanging arround, trying hard to look very veryVERY cool.
Trying.
Because it´s cold, wet, and that big piercing there is a royal pain in the ...
--++--
Rumhängen, und dabei versuchen sehr sehrSEHR cool auzusehen.
Versuchen.
Also muss man alles, was unter Wasser (oder was...) ist, größer malen.
Ausprobieren. Tut auch nicht weh.
--++--
Painting something in a liquid (mostly water or other transparent matter) is not as difficult as it seems. One thing to keep in mind is the lens-effect, a glas of water (or something else) has. So paint bigger, whats under water (or something...). The other is, that things, half in air ans half in liquid, are "broken". That means for instance, a stick to stir with is not a straight line inside and outside the water. There is an angle at the waterlevel.
Another important thing is that highlights and shadows of the part of the glass, that is in front, go through the things inside the glass. And things in liquid are usually a bit blurry and pale.
But thats it. Try it, it doesn´t hurt.

How to paint with halfdry paint - Schinken

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 10cm x 15cm.

Nein.
Wird er nicht. Es ist Schinken.
Ich mag Schinken.

Ich hab Hunger.
--++--
Bacon is pouring out from the left top corner. Soon is will be spread all over the panel.
It´s like a disease creeping, covering the world eventually!

No.
It´s not. It´s bacon.
I like bacon.

I´m hungry.
------------------------------
--++--
The meat is painted with rode madder, ultramarine, titanium white and ocher. The structure of the meat is made by repainting the half dried paint with the same brush. It makes the paint partly come off the panel making an uneven but still monochromous structure. Which happens to look quite similar to meat.
You have to be careful with this trick. Don´t wipe the paint off, you´ll need it there. Reapply the loose parts.

How to live with the void - Weintraubensilvester

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 10cm x 15cm.
--++--
Happy new year!!
Well,as in every year in the past, the grapes were practising for new year´s eve. And as in every year in the past they were fighting fiercly about the honur to be the first to be launched.
------------------------------

Man spiele damit herum.
Maximal reduzieren.
Lücken malen.
--++--
If you suffer from horror vacui (angst of void) and tend to crowd your picture with "compositional things" just to have something there, you have a problem. Because you are actually blurring the structure of your composition ("less is more" applies here, not everywhere, but here) and makes it harder to find mistakes and weaknesses.
As I mentioned in the post before, you have to see the "void" (No picture has a void. It´s all panel/canvas. Except Fontana´s) not as a void but as an equal element of the two-dimensional composition.

Play around with that.
Reduce to the max.
Paint voids.

How to compose interestingly - Schüchterne Kirschen

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 10cm x 15cm.
Ach, was waren die schüchtern.
--++--
Oh, were they shy.
In their baroque beauty they really didn´ have a reason. But at least they managed to attend the picture. Their impressive appearrance, so they thought, scared off all others. But they were only off for lunchbreak.
This way shyness covertly evolves into arrogance, sometimes.
------------------------------
--++--
Composition is a tool to make a picture interesting. Like colour and shape. But composition seldom is used appropiately.
To do so, you can, for instance, arrange the elements of a picture off balance. Seemingly. But if you understand the background as an element of composition, there is always a balance. The difference is between stable (in its extreme: symmetry) and unstable.
Stable compositions tell a whole story from start to end, no surprises or questions left unanswered.
An unstable composition points outside itself, it starts, but its end is open, unknown, it leaves room for imagination.
I like that better.

How to paint a towel - Schlapp und Blau

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 10cm x 15cm.

--++--
He was really flaccid after a hard day in the water. But hanging out made his feeling blue not dissapear.

And that he was a towel did´t really improve things.
------------------------------

--++--
Three colours are used here (again). Titaniumwhite, bohemian green earth (I hope my translation is correct, I couldn´t find in my dictionary) and ultramarine blue. The background is white with very little green earth (this really sounds weird. Does anybody know about Grüne Erde in english?). The clothesline is green earth and the towel is ultramarine.
What I´d like to point out here, is the fact, that the towell is painted in a watercolour kind of way. Meaning, that the lighter parts are left out, so the the light background stays visible.

Use this where ever possible. It is always an elegant way to make things come alive. The surface has to be dry to prevent unpleasant surprises like colour coming of the picture again while painting on them. Start with the darkest parts and use thiner paint for the lighter areas. Practise on some paper, if you are insecure! Because corrections are almost impossible.

How to paint abstract colourfield - Nach dem Sturm

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 10cm x 15cm.
Hey! Wo ist mein Haus! Und wo ist mein schöner Garten!
Nicht hier, mein Sohn. Dies ist ein abstraktes Farbfeld. Sei andächtig und bleib weg vom Rasen.
--++--
Hey! Where is my house! And where is my beautiful garden!
Not here, son. This is a abstract colourfield. Be devoutly and stay off the grass.
------------------------------
Zwei horizontale Streifen. In irgenwie sozusagen natürlichen Farben.
Alle Farbfeldmalerei ist also sozusagen Landschaft.

--++--
What we have here is a minimized concept of landscape. Two horizontal stripes. In kindasorta natural colours. From here a certain type of abstraction has derived, the colourfield. Add a stripe or two or substract one, make them horizontally or turn it to any other angle, change the colours, sharpen or blur the edges, make it opaque or translucent, thin layers or thick ones. More variations don´t come to my mind right now (it was a hard day...). Any suggestions?
So in a way, all colourfield painting is landscape. If you do it, the only thing left to do is find a reason for your variation. Just to have an answer when someone asks. But people seldom do.

By the way: The vertical lighter zones are my crappy gessoing. Don´t do it like that, please...

How to use up paint left over - Frachtraumschiff

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 10cm x 15cm.
Kaffee import.
--++--
There was some primary colour left over from the previous post. So I did this spaceship. It´s a cargo spaceship. Coffee import.
------------------------------
--++--
As you can see, without white, be it zinc, lead or titanium, it gets hard to give things volume. Red is missused as shadow, yellow is missunderstood as light. And the blue is just there.
Without white things look like in a movie showing a scene at night.
If you need that, fine. If not, use white.

How to mix colours without mixing paint - Biergarten

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 10cm x 15cm.
Reaktion: Null.
--++--
After the fifth beer (bavarian size) he closed his eyes. Then suddenly his neck muscles went on strike. But his back still worked. So he was a man, sitting upright as only completely drunk men can sit upright, with his head fallen down on his chest.
He opened his eyes again. The beer was gone out of sight. But the horrible tablecloth came fully into view. "The owner of this biergarten has a very bad taste!" he shouted out loud.
Reaction: zero.
------------------------------
Die hier verwendeten Pigmente sind Indischgelb, Miloriblau und Igrazinrot Rubin. Alles Varianten der Primärfarben, alles Lasurpigmente. Die waagerechten Streifen sind zuerst gemalt. Dann die senkrechten, mit Zwischenräumen.
So. Etwas genauer hingucken.
--++--
The pigments used here are indian yellow, milori blue and igrazine red rubin. All variants of the primary colours, all translucent pigments. The horizontal stripes were painted first. Then the vertical ones, leaving space between them.
Now. Lets have a closer look. What happens, when one colour is painted over the same colour, is clear: it gets darker more intense (more precise: the white gesso underneath is seen less). And when one primary colour is painted over another primary colour, you get a secondary colour. Yellow over red=orange, yellow over blue=green, blue over red=violet.
But look at the difference between the green, that a blue stripe makes over a yellow stipe (left edge first row) and the green, you get painting a yellow stripe over a blue one (third vertical stripe from the left second row).
The last glaze sets the accent. The same goes for the different oranges and violets. If you want a yellowish green, paint the yellow last. If you want a blueish violet, paint the blue last.

How to recover from old school - Nukleare Explosion

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 10cm x 15cm.
Oh, wirklich?
Sie meinen das ist Broccoli?
Warum ist das nicht eine nukleare Explosion?
Was macht Sie so sicher?
Hm??
Es ist grün. Ok. Ich verstehe.
Es gibt also keine grünen nuklearen Explosionen.
Aaalles klar.
Ok, wo ist ihr Betreuer?
--++--
Oh yes?
You think this is broccoli?
Why isn´t it a nuclear explosion?
What makes you so sure?
Hm??
It´s green. Ok. I see.
So there are no green nuclear explosions.
Ah, you have a degree in nuclear explosions. Riiight.
Ok, where is your medical attendant?
--------------------------------
--++--
After all this "old school" stuff a quick and dirty broccoli painting (yes, it is broccoli...). But still the layer kind of painting lingers on. The stem is painted with cadmium green and layers of black on it to give it the typical strukture. The rest is no layer at all.
But it´s the important part. To give it volume the titanium white the black and the greens are dabbed in an order following the logic of the light. Light comes from above, so the tops of the bulges are greenish white and the lower edges are blackish green. Try to paint that quick. If it fails, remove all paint and start again. Don´t repair.

How to do it old school: Step 09 - Tischtennisschläger

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 10cm x 15cm.
--++--
Could also be a ping-pong paddle designed by someone experimenting with some new powder to inhale using a bank note...
------------------------------

--++--
An apple is an apple is an apple.

This is a finally complete picture. What is the difference to the previous? It is varnished. Regrettably it is almost not visible in the jpeg-file. The colours are more saturated and at the same time more transparent so that underlying layers play a bigger role. The varnish is a 1:2 dammar-varnish, one thin layer. 1:2 means one volume-part of Dammar resin is dissolved in 2 volume-parts of turpentine.
More on that later.

Herzlichen Gruß

Gerd

PS.: Das zweite Bild is vom vorherigen Post.

The second picture is from the previous post. Just to compare and regret the poor quality of jpeg...

How to do it old school: Step 08 - Apfelwirklichkeit

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 10cm x 15cm.
Tätäääh! Fertig! Kein Schlüsselloch, U-boot, Alptraum oder Elephant! Es ist ein Apfel!

Nun.
Eigentlich.

Vielmehr alles was jenseits dessen ist.

--++--
Taddah! Finished! No keyhole, submarine, mightmare or elephant! It´s an apple!

Well.
Actually.
Dont try to take a bite. The panel tastes kinda wooden.

A picture of an apple is not an apple. The concept of a thing, the word meaning a thing is not the thing. But still the apple is a reality and the picture is another(!) reality. And we haven´t even touched the concept of truth here, which goes way beyond appearance and is dealing much more with the Möglichkeitsfeld (the word-by-word translation is "field of possibilities" which doesn´t feel right, sorry there is a limit of my english) of contents.
Although the picture is meant as a realistic depiction (which is, funny enough, often perceived as "true"), I doubt, that, looking attentively at it, "apple" is the only thought that crosses the mind. Showing something always links to something behind the shown. Thats why representational art is so complex. Because in being representational, art is in its concept abstract.

Ehm.

To boil it down to something digestable: By showing an apple, you never mean just an apple. Moreover any thought beyond that. And that is abstraction.
But by showing a black square, you mean a black square. And by showing a certain blue, you mean that certain blue. And that is conceptually represetational.

We used to laugh a lot about this phenomenon at the academy. But my experience is that the sense of irony of abstract painters is different...
------------------------------
--++--
A layer of coelin-blue is applied on the background, the warmer tone of the apple is made of premanent-yellow, igrazine-red and coelin-blue, with much yellow added in the colour mixes.

How to do it old school: Step 07 - Scheißjob

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 10cm x 15cm.

--++--
Yes he was a lean man, and yes, his elephant wasn´t the entertainer par excellance.

But was that a reason? Couldn´t they laugh just to be polite?? The job wasn´t his first choice. And not his second, if you know what I mean. And that the elephant didn´t get his happy pill today, wasn´t his fault!
------------------------------
--++--
As said in the previous post: white is coming back to lighten up our life. But it is titanium-white this time, at least the really white zone. Underneath ist zinc-white layer slightly bigger and so giving a soft transition to the untouched areas of the apple. The background is unchanged.
I am runnig a bit out of patience, to be honest. I´m not the big disciple of Cennini, you know. A few more steps, and this baby has landed, I hope.

How to do it old school: Step 06 - Masochistisch

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 10cm x 15cm.
Ich mag Äpfel. Nicht das ich verrückt danach wäre. Sie sind ganz ok. Die leckeren wenigstens. Die, die schlecht schmecken, mag ich nicht. Nee.

--++--
I like apples. Not that I am fanatic about it. They´re ok. At least the tasty ones. I don´t like the ones that taste bad. Nah.
There are, actually apples, that look good but taste not so. They´re difficult. I don´t like that either. Difficulties, I mean. They make life, well, difficult.

I wonder wether apples like humans. If so, they must be pretty masochistic, I guess.
------------------------------
Also nochmal.
Diese Schichtenmalerei kann endlos weitergehen. Wenigstens in Tempera.
--++--
Another layer of translucent colours and not the last. Miloriblue in the background, and cobaltgreen and rubinered on the apple. It is more colour now, but it gets too dark and the tone of the apple ist too cold. There we go again.
This layer painting can go on forever. At least with tempera. Oil is different, after about seven layers you´re in real trouble.

herzlichen Gruß

How to do it old school: Step 05 - Fallen

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 10cm x 15cm.
Und plötzlich wußte er, das er fiel. Endlos fiel.

--++--
And suddenly, he knew he was falling. Endlessly falling. The great panic, that caught him slowly, dissolved into content. Because he kept falling. As long there is no bottom, there´s no need to worry. One could even argue, that falling without hitting something somewhere in the end is not perceiveable as falling. It is moving, yes. So wandering through these philosophical sophistries, he didn´t realise, that he was transforming into an apple. That being a capital reason to panic, the cried out loud, as luod an apple could cry out loud.

Well. You know. He awoke crying, his bed soaking wet, not exactly yearning for apples.
------------------------------
--++--
As previously announced, light ans shadow are back. Zinc-white is used only. It gave the apple back the volume and turned the flat background into a space. Which, done in that particular way, adds a little movement. The apple is not lying or sitting anymore, it is hovering, at least.

How to do it old school: Step 04 - U-Boot

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 10cm x 15cm.

--++--
First there was nothing. Absolutely nothing to see. But they all knew, that it was there. Silent. And very big.
Then, suddenly, it got visible right in front, comming closer: The new submarine with the revolutionary silent-engine-technology. Majestetically, slowly. it got bigger and bigger.

And we all wondered why it was green.
------------------------------
Farben.
--++--
Colours. For the first time. Milori blue for the background and cobalt green for the apple. One thin layer each. Simple task, this time.
For obtaining pigments, dammar and the like I recommend Kremer Pigmente. And no, this was not a paid advertisement. I´m simply conviced by the competence of that company.
As you can see, the picture gets flat, the lights and shadows are moderated by the colour. That has to change in the next step.

Herzlichen Gruß

How to do it old school: Step 03 - Fast keine Vitamine

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 10cm x 15cm.
Was??
--++--
What??
Serious?
Almost no vitamins in apples? The sense, the fundament of his life was blown away in an instant. All colour of his face vanished. His stomach sank down to his knees, who were very busy getting very soft.
All these years he had been the apple of her eyes. And now she was turning to those crappy cellulitic oranges.
------------------------------
Nun kommt Grau.
--++--
Now grey comes. The apple-shaped hole is replaced by an apple. By an image of an apple, to be precise...
And it goes like this.
Apples are segmented like oranges, without the clear separation. But they giv the apple the characteristic difference to a sphere. This is already visible in the shape and is now to be painted in light and shadow by graytones. The light ought to come from the left, so lighter on that side. The blotty surfacestructure of this sort of apple can be done with little, short, dark grey brushstrokes. Then you can, after the paint has dried just a little, lighten the blotty apple a little with zinc-white (!) (zincwhite is not opaque like titanwhite but translucent) and in doing so blurring the short, dark brushstrokes. The background is illuminated with the same white giving a medium grey, so to speak.

How to do it old school: Step 02 - Schlüsselloch

Eitempera - Eggtempera, 10cm x 15cm.

--++--
He peeped through the ladys-room keyhole rarely. But that it snowed so fiercly over there, really kept him thinking.
------------------------------
Fertig.

Schwarzpigment ist Beinschwarz.

Wir wollen den Hintergrund dunkel haben. Also untermalt man ihn schwarz.
--++--
An egg-tempera recipe should be here, actually.
Here is the short form:
Ingredients: Egg, linseedvarnish, dammar.
Quantitative relation: egg:linseedvanish:dammar = 1 : 1/2 : 1/2
Shake egg 3min. Shake 3min after each addition of ingredient
That´s it.

Black pigment is animal carbon.
We want the background dark. So we underpaint it black. The apple-shape is omitted, the gesso is still visible.

Herzlichen Gruß

How to do it old school: Step 01 - Problem umgangen

Thank you all for your comments (always wellcome) and e-mails!

I found a way to avoid the picture-upload-problem. Blogger Status thinks they solved the problem. Feels different, actually...

Buntstiftzeichnung auf DIN A6 - Coloured pencil drawing on DIN A6 paper
--++--
He was so fat. He was so fat and content, that the assumption, it could be embarrasing for him, simply didn´t occur. On the contrary. Due to his monstrosity he attracted all eyes and seemed to swell even more.
------------------------------
Heute versuchen wir mal was anderes.

--++--
Today we´ll try something different. It won´t be as brilliant as on Dennis Harpers blog, but it will be a picture production old school style.

We paint an apple.
First you make a drawing. As precise and detailed as needed (usually this rule applies: The more accurate now, the less trouble later).
Next step tomorrow.

Note:

I used this method (of which as many variations exist as users...) only a few times. I´m not patient enough. But on should do this at least to understand what had been achieved in renaissance and before.

Herzlichen Gruß

Gerd
